LSD DETERMINATION USING HIGH-PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY/FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY

Abstract

The confirmation and definition of the quantity of LSD in biological fluids can be performed successfully by high performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence spectroscopy. The application of microextraction for this purpose makes analysis simpler and more reliable, and control over each step of the extraction process is easier. This paper presents one such method. It must be remembered that preliminary (screening) tests should be performed prior to definition of quantity. In this method n-butyl chloride was applied as the extractant of LSD from an alkaline pH 9 solution. Lysergic acid methylpropylamide (LAMPA) as the internal standard was added to a small volume (0.2 ml) of the specimen (blood or urine). The LSD recovery was 63% and the detection limit (S/N = 3) was 130 pg/ml. No interfering peaks from the matrix were observed during analysis. One case of LSD intoxication with 10.8 ng/ml in urine has been described.
